Ana Hotels, Ana Group's hotel unit, posted $8.54 million turnover in three quarters this year, up 6.4% from the year-ago period.
Ana Hotels expects $11.53m full-year turnover, 7% more than last year. "The demand for hotel services has increased 25% this year as compared with 2002, whereas event management, conferences and meetings were the main factors fuelling this growth. This segment also boosted other sectors in the business," Mircea Moldovan, secretary general of Ana Group, says. Ana Group, held by businessman George Copos, is the main shareholder of Ana Hotels.
Ana Hotels reported 10.6 billion ROL losses in the first three quarters this year, in contrast to the year-ago profit worth 30.4 billion ROL. The entire profit was reinvested last year. "This year's losses are due to the major investments made on the seaside," Moldovan explains.
Ana Hotels saw $10.8 million in turnover last year. The company was operating five hotels in 2002 - three in Poiana Brasov, one in Bucharest and another one in Eforie Nord (Astoria). Also based in Eforie Nord, the five-star Europa hotel was launched this summer.
The six hotels total 683 rooms: 164 in Bucharest, 321 on the seaside and 197 in the mountains. As for the occupancy rate, Crowne Plaza posted 54.8% last year, and 66.3% in nine months this year. The 'food & beverage" segment came to account for 40% of the total revenues, while event management climbed to 20%, according to data released by the company. Most clients are businesspeople and account for some 80% of the total. Romanian clients contribute to the company's revenues mostly by organising conferences and events, which are mainly supported by the companies they work for. The newcomers in the company's portfolio are Astoria (2002) in seaside resort Eforie Nord and Europe, which opened this summer. georgiana.stavarache@zf.ro
