Air France-KLM to strengthen second position after Alitalia's takeover

18.01.2009, 16:54 8

Airline operator Air France-KLM, which has taken over a 25% stake in Alitalia, will consolidate its position as No. 2 on the Romanian market when this partnership becomes a fact locally, as well. The merger on the local market, will, however, be a long-term process. For instance, in 2007, when the Air France-KLM merger took place on the local market, it had already been three years since the parent companies received the approval of the European Competition Council. Similarly, the Lufthansa-SWISS merger occurred in 2008 on the Romanian market, whereas the international transaction was concluded in 2005. Air France-KLM reached a 20% market share when the merger was sealed on the Romanian market, and became No. 2, after TAROM, according to company estimates. Air France-KLM does not reveal its results on the Romanian market, but ZF estimates put its turnover at over 50 million euros. Air France currently operates five daily flights from Bucharest to Paris under a code share agreement with TAROM (three operated by Air France and two by TAROM) while KLM has three daily flights from Bucharest to Amsterdam.
