With the disappearance of some major industrial centres that were turned into real estate businesses, as it happened with many Brasov companies, for instance, the only big card Romania can still bet on is the one of energy, believes Mihai David, general manager of Hidroelectrica, a man who is now playing a key role in the restructuring of the energy system.

"The only thing still standing we've got is the energy system. In Brasov, for instance, which used to be the second economic centre of the country, there is nothing left. What should we rely on for growth? On the IT? It's out of the question," believes Mihai David.

Currently, David is handling the setting up of one of the two energy giants, Hidroenergetica, through which Romanian authorities are trying to reorganise the country's generation system.

While the idea of regrouping all the large production facilities of Romania is facing a wave of criticism, especially from the major international energy giants that came here through privatisation processes, David believes there are several interests behind this.
