Suceava malls fight over strawberry pickers' money

Along the corridors of Suceava malls you tend to meet more security personnel than visitors, except on the days when locals who return from work in Italy and Spain (where many of them are employed as strawberry pickers i.e.) come to buy home appliances or furniture for the homes they built close to their parents' homes.
"It is always like this- empty all the time," says one shop assistant in a Tina R store in Galleria Suceava shopping centre. Andreea, manager of a clothing store in Shopping City Suceava, is somewhat more optimistic, saying "sales have risen over the last two weeks because workers have returned from Italy and Spain. Sales are less significant at the weekend, because the weather is hot, and people leave the city."
Suceava is the city with the highest density of modern retail spaces per capita.
