The top 10 Romanian-held construction companies posted 213 million euros in gross income, similar to the 2009 level, although the construction market contracted by 17% during this period.

At the top of the ranking are builders specialising in infrastructure works that have mainly been involved in rehabilitation of national roads and streets in the main Romanian cities.

Businessman Dorinel Umbrarescu in Bacau, who owns Spedition UMB and Tehnostrade, saw his two businesses post 101.4 million euros in cumulated gross profit, up 10% on the preceding year, although last year was the first year of crisis for the construction market since 2000.

The third most profitable construction company in Romania in 2009 was Giurgiu-based Romstrade with a 37.8 million-euro gross profit.
