Romtelecom and Cosmote, telecom operators controlled by OTE and Deutsche Telekom groups, continued to see rises in client numbers in the first quarter of the year, with fixed telephony being the only segment that saw a decline.
The number of fixed lines fell by 7.09%, from 2.93 million to 2.7 million, while Romtelecom's client base rose significantly on Internet and television services.
The number of company clients for fixed and mobile Internet services climbed by 18.5%, from a little over 700,000 in the first quarter of last year to over 830,000 on 31 March 2010, with the overall number of subscribers to TV services (satellite television - DTH and Internet television - IPTV) rising by 23.4%, from 724,545 to 893,757.
Romtelecom revenues fell by 3.3% in the first quarter, to 194.8 million euros, with EBITDA falling by 20.2%, to 59.3 million euros.
Revenues of Cosmote, no. 3 on the Romanian mobile phone market, rose by 13.3% in the first quarter, to 114.8 million euros, thanks to the large number of post-paid clients, but EBITDA fell by 56.3%, to 6.6 million euros, because of Zapp integration. This is the first time that Cosmote includes Zapp in its results.
