What Tariceanu and Nastase would do about the economy were they in Boc's shoes

Former premiers Calin Popescu-Tariceanu (PNL) and Adrian Nastase (PSD) yesterday spoke during the "After 20 years" Pro TV show about the effects of the agreement signed with the IMF, both of them agreeing that raising VAT would be a major mistake, in the context where the Government is seeking resources to support the state apparatus. As regards the 16% flat tax, the two former Executive heads, now in the Opposition, have divergent opinions. One must not seek "Noble prize" solutions, but solutions tested before, says Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, mentioning four essential measures are needed, at least to "halt the economic decline" if not restart the engines of the economy: incentives aimed at enterprises, boosting consumption, cutting some expenses without introducing additional taxes and public investments with money from the governmental sector. Asked whether he would have laid off public sector employees, Tariceanu avoided providing a clear answer, specifying he would have taken different steps from Boc. Nastase did not answer the question, either, mentioning there were only 900,000 public sector workers back in 2004.
