The Romanian subsidiary of Poland's Can-Pack group, which owns an aluminium packaging plant in Bucharest, a less visible business, ended last year with turnover worth around 42m euros, around 25% less in euros from 2008. Income reached 300,000 euros, nine times lower than the 2009 figure. "2009 and 2008 incomes cannot be in any way compared as two years ago saw a series of real estate deals that generated one-off income, while the 2009 figure resulted only from the core business. The decrease can also be accounted for by the different mix of sold products, namely more smaller than bigger cans," stated Cristian Cornea, general manager of Can-Pack Romania. He maintains his main responsibility is to make sure the company stays in business during this period of economic and political chaos. In 2009, Can-Pack, which provides 80-90% of the beer cans sold by Heineken, SABMiller, InBev or Tuborg Romania, sold around 500 million cans, 15% less than in 2008. Cornea says he expects sales to amount to 600-650 million cans this year.
